The University Grants Commission (UGC) has permitted eligible universities and higher education institutions to introduce one-year postgraduate programmes through online and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) modes.
The new option is intended for students who have completed a four-year undergraduate degree with Honours or Honours with Research. The move expands the one-year master’s structure introduced under the National Education Policy 2020 beyond traditional classroom-based programmes.
Who Is Eligible for a One-Year PG Programme?
Students must have completed a four-year bachelor’s programme with Honours or Honours with Research to be considered for admission to a one-year postgraduate degree.
Under the UGC’s postgraduate curriculum framework, the four-year undergraduate qualification should generally carry at least 160 credits. The one-year PG programme will consist of two semesters and require a minimum of 40 credits.
Students who have completed a conventional three-year undergraduate degree will generally continue to follow the two-year postgraduate route.
Can Every University Offer These Courses?
Universities cannot automatically begin offering one-year online or distance PG degrees.
Only institutions already recognised or entitled by the UGC to offer the corresponding two-year postgraduate programme in online or ODL mode can introduce its one-year version in the same discipline.
Before launching a programme, the institution must also receive approval from its statutory academic bodies, including its:
Board of Studies
Academic Council
Executive Council
This means students should not assume that every university offering a two-year classroom-based master’s degree will immediately provide a one-year online alternative.
What Will Students Study?

According to the UGC framework, institutions can design the curriculum based on the nature of the subject and the expected learning outcomes. A programme may therefore include advanced coursework, a dissertation, research project, practical training or other discipline-specific components.
Can Students Change Their Subject at the PG Level?
Students may pursue a postgraduate programme connected to either the major or minor subject studied during their undergraduate degree.
They may also seek admission to a different discipline if they clear the relevant national-level or university-level entrance examination prescribed for that programme. Universities may establish additional admission requirements according to UGC regulations.
What About MBA, MCA and PGDM Programmes?
Professional courses such as MBA, MCA and PGDM may continue to follow separate eligibility and regulatory requirements.
Students interested in these programmes should therefore verify the criteria issued by the university and the relevant statutory or professional regulatory body before applying.

Why Is This Change Important?
The decision may particularly benefit working professionals, students living away from major university centres and learners who need a more flexible academic schedule.
An eligible student could complete a master’s degree in one year without relocating or leaving a job, provided a recognised institution offers the relevant programme online or through distance learning.
However, students must carefully check the university’s UGC recognition, programme entitlement, curriculum, examination pattern and admission rules. The announcement allows eligible institutions to launch these programmes—it does not mean that one-year online PG admissions have opened at every university.
