Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this specific predictor and how it works.

Sikh Minority seats are reserved at engineering colleges managed by Sikh community educational trusts that hold minority institution status granted by NCMEI (National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions). These institutions may reserve up to 50% of seats for Sikh minority candidates. This is outside JOSAA — handled through state counselling or direct college admission.
Official Guidelines

JEE 2026 — Rules You Cannot Afford to Miss

Critical eligibility, document, and counselling rules that catch students off-guard every year.

Registration & Eligibility

  • You must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics.
  • 75% aggregate (or top 20 percentile of your board) required for IIT/NIT/IIIT admission — 65% for SC/ST.
  • JEE Main can be attempted in up to 3 consecutive years; JEE Advanced only twice.
  • Age limit: born on or after October 1, 1999 (5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD).

Document Checklist for JOSAA

  • Class 10 certificate for date-of-birth proof.
  • Class 12 mark sheet and passing certificate.
  • Category certificate (OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS) — must be issued by competent authority for 2026–26.
  • PwD certificate from a government hospital if applicable.
  • Photo ID: Aadhaar, Passport, or Voter ID.

JOSAA Counselling Process

  • 6 rounds of seat allotment — attend at least the first 4 for maximum options.
  • After each allotment: Accept & Freeze (stop here), Accept & Float (upgrade auto-applied), or Withdraw.
  • Pay the seat acceptance fee (₹35,000 General / ₹15,000 SC/ST) online within the deadline.
  • Report to the allotted institute with originals for physical document verification.

Important Rules to Remember

  • Candidates who accept a seat in Rounds 1–5 and then withdraw are barred from further JOSAA rounds (but can join CSAB).
  • OBC-NCL certificate must be from the current financial year — old certificates are rejected.
  • Home State quota is determined by the state where you completed Class 12, not your state of domicile.
  • JEE Main score is valid for JOSAA — JEE Advanced is mandatory only for IIT seats.

Why Our Predictions Differ From Other Sites

Candidate surge factored in

We model the 15.5L candidate surge of 2026 into our rank projections — most sites use raw historical data.

Round 6 data only

We use final Round 6 allotments, not Round 1–5. This is the actual admission cutoff, not an intermediate number.

HS/OS quota split

Every NIT prediction automatically distinguishes Home State and Other State quotas — a detail most generic predictors miss.

Explained

Why the Same Marks Give Different Percentiles

JEE Main is held across multiple shifts. NTA normalises scores so a harder paper doesn't disadvantage you.

NTA Normalization — Visual

Shift 1 (Easy)240 marks → 99.2 %ile
99.2th percentile
Shift 2 (Moderate)240 marks → 99.6 %ile
99.6th percentile
Shift 3 (Hard)240 marks → 99.9 %ile
99.9th percentile

Same 240 marks, three different percentiles — because you're ranked only against candidates in your shift, not all 15L+ students.

01

Raw marks calculated per shift

NTA calculates each candidate's raw score from their answer sheet. No comparison across shifts at this stage.

02

Percentile computed within the shift

Your percentile = (candidates who scored ≤ you ÷ total in your shift) × 100. A 240 in a tough paper beats more people.

03

Multi-shift percentiles merged

Percentiles from all shifts are combined into a single All India merit list. This is your final JEE Main percentile.

04

AIR assigned from merged list

Your All India Rank is determined from this merged percentile list. This rank is what JOSAA uses for seat allocation.

Target Ranks

Specific Rank Targets You're Searching For

JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced qualifying marks 2026?

The qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced 2026 (General category) is expected to be around 88–92 marks out of 300 in JEE Main. You need to be in the top 2.5 lakh qualifiers. Reserved categories have a relaxed cutoff — typically 40–60% of General.

IIIT-H

Rank needed for IIIT Hyderabad?

IIIT Hyderabad CSE (JoSAA 2026 Round 6) closed at approximately AIR 12,000–14,000 for General category. This translates to roughly 99.0+ percentile. It's the most competitive IIIT by a wide margin due to its research reputation.

Top 5 IITs

JEE Advanced marks for a top 5 IIT?

To secure a seat in a top 5 IIT (IIT B/D/M/K/Kgp) in a branch of your choice, aim for AIR under 1,000 in JEE Advanced — roughly 55–60%+ marks (165–180 out of 306). For CSE specifically at IIT Bombay, you need AIR under 70.

95 Percentile

Which NITs with 95 percentile?

At 95 percentile (~AIR 45,000–55,000, OS General), you can target: Mechanical/Civil at NIT Calicut, Surathkal, Warangal. For CSE at this percentile, explore mid-tier NITs on HS quota or IIITs. Use the predictor above with your exact rank.

Why InsideEdge Predictor

Built for Serious Aspirants

Not just a rank lookup. We give you the context to make smarter decisions.

All 23 IITs Covered

Predict your chances across every IIT using your JEE Advanced rank. Filter by branch — CSE, ECE, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical — and view opening/closing ranks for each JOSAA round.

Smart Quota Detection

Our algorithm automatically accounts for Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) quota differences across all 31 NITs — the single biggest factor most students overlook.

IIITs & GFTIs Included

Explore 26 IIITs and 30+ GFTIs alongside IITs and NITs. Many IIITs deliver placements comparable to mid-tier NITs at a fraction of the rank competition.

Home State Quota

The 20,000-Rank Advantage Nobody Talks About

NITs reserve 50% of seats for students who passed Class 12 from the state where the NIT is located. This can swing your cutoff by 20,000–30,000 ranks.

Real Example — NIT Trichy CSE, 2026

Home State (Tamil Nadu)

3,500

Closing AIR — Round 6

Other State

1,500

Closing AIR — Round 6

A Tamil Nadu student secures NIT Trichy CSE with an AIR 2,000 lower than an OS student needs.

How Home State Is Determined

Based on where you passed Class 12 — not where you were born.
Studied in Delhi under CBSE? Delhi is your home state for NIT Delhi.
Maharashtra State Board student? VNIT Nagpur treats you as Home State.
Studied abroad? You're an Other State candidate everywhere.

IITs & IIITs don't have Home State quota — purely All India.

Special Categories

Female Supernumerary & EWS — Your Extra Edge

Female Supernumerary Quota

NITs and IIITs offer supernumerary female-only seats (over and above sanctioned strength) to improve gender diversity. Female candidates compete for both gender-neutral AND female-only pools — effectively doubling available seats.

Impact Example — NIT Trichy CSE 2026

Male Closing AIR

1,500

Female Closing AIR

10,000

Always select "Female-Only" in the predictor to see this additional set of colleges.

EWS Category — 10% Reservation

The Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category was added in 2019, creating 10% additional seats. EWS cutoffs are approximately 85–90% of General category ranks — a significant relaxation.

Family income below ₹8 LPA from all sources
Family doesn't own more than 5 acres of agricultural land
Residential flat below 1000 sq ft
Annual income certificate from state/UT authority required
EWS certificate must be issued for the financial year of admission (2026–26), not earlier years.
Decision Framework

Branch vs College — The Real Trade-off

"Top NIT non-CS or mid-tier IIIT CSE?" — the most debated question. Here's how to think about it.

Choose Branch (CSE/IT) if…

You want a software/tech career
Placements show 3–4x packages in tier-2 CSE vs non-CS top NIT
You plan to work in IT — India's highest-hiring sector
You're comfortable with self-learning over brand recognition

Choose College (Top NIT) if…

You're targeting an MS/MBA from a top university abroad
Brand name and alumni network are central to your goals
You have genuine interest in core engineering disciplines
You plan to appear for UPSC, GATE, or civil services

Our take

If you're unsure about your interests, pick CSE in a decent college over a non-CS branch in a top NIT. Branch change requires top 1% CGPA and is extremely difficult. 80%+ campus placements across all NITs are IT/software roles anyway.

Talk to branch seniors from both sides — on InsideEdge
Drop Year?

Is Taking a Drop Worth It at 92 Percentile?

One of the most asked questions — here's an honest, data-backed answer.

Consider a drop if…

Your target is IIT or NIT Trichy/Warangal CSE and you're within 2–3 percentile of the cutoff
You've identified exactly what went wrong and have a clear improvement plan
You're mentally prepared — a drop requires discipline most underestimate
Your coaching/self-study setup is strong enough to add 5–8+ percentile

Don't drop if…

You got 92 percentile and your target is anything below top 5 NITs — great options exist now
You haven't identified the root cause of your current score
You're dropping due to peer pressure, not your own conviction
Your family can't financially or emotionally support a gap year

The honest math at 92 percentile

At 92 percentile (~AIR 1.1L), you can already get into NIT Agartala, Hamirpur, or IIIT Lucknow CSE with Home State quota — solid colleges with good IT placements. A drop to target NIT Trichy/Warangal CSE (needs 99.5+ %ile) is a massive jump — only consider it if you have a concrete, tested improvement plan.

JOSAA Strategy

How to Fill Choices Like a Topper

The right strategy during counselling matters as much as your rank. Here's what consistently works.

01

Fill in order of preference, not probability

Always list your dream college first. JOSAA checks your list top-to-bottom and allocates the highest available option. If IIT Bombay CSE isn't at the top, you'll never get it even if a seat opens.

02

Fill maximum choices — aim for 100+

JOSAA allows unlimited choices. Students who fill 200+ choices consistently get better outcomes. No gaps in your list — if you skip #50, you waste 149 potential slots.

03

Float is safer than Freeze

Float: accept your current seat but stay in for a better option — safest strategy. Freeze: accept and exit counselling. Slide: risky. Default to Float unless you're 100% happy with your allotment.

04

Don't skip any round

Cutoffs drop 500–2,000 ranks in later rounds as candidates withdraw. Many students land unexpected upgrades in Round 5 or 6. Participate in every single round.

05

Should I freeze in Round 6 or wait for CSAB?

If you have a satisfactory seat in JoSAA R6, freeze it — CSAB is not guaranteed. But if you're borderline for a better college, CSAB special rounds typically show cutoffs 500–2,000 ranks lower. The risk: CSAB may not have your target branch.
