How Medical Admissions Work in 2027
Unlike engineering, medicine has one exam. Every MBBS and BDS seat in India — government, private, deemed, AIIMS, JIPMER and AFMC — is filled through NEET UG ranks. BAMS, BHMS, BUMS and BSMS (AYUSH) seats, BVSc & AH and B.Sc Nursing at many institutes also use NEET scores. There is no second session, so the single day in May decides the year.
After the result, seats are split between two counselling systems. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) fills 15% All India Quota seats in government colleges plus all AIIMS, JIPMER, central, deemed and ESIC seats. Your state's counselling authority fills the remaining 85% of state government seats and private-college seats. Most students register for both, and the two run in parallel from July onwards, so missing a registration deadline can cost you a seat even with a good rank.
NEET UG 2026 was held on 3 May, then cancelled and conducted again on 21 June, which pushed results and counselling later than usual. For 2027, plan around the usual first-Sunday-of-May date until NTA publishes the bulletin, and keep the June–October window free for counselling rounds.
