Engineering admissions in India run through one national exam (JEE Main), the IIT gateway (JEE Advanced), state CETs, and private-university tests like BITSAT, VITEEE, SRMJEEE and MET. How Engineering Admissions Work in 2027
Think of engineering admissions in three layers. The first is national: JEE Main decides admission to the 31 NITs, 26 IIITs and other centrally funded institutes through JoSAA, and its top ~2.5 lakh candidates qualify for JEE Advanced, the only route into the 23 IITs. JEE Main runs twice — Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April — and your better score counts, so January is a genuine first attempt, not a mock.
The second layer is your home state. MHT CET, WBJEE, KCET, TS EAPCET and AP EAPCET fill state-quota seats in government colleges such as COEP, Jadavpur, RVCE and JNTU, often at a lower rank than an NIT would need. Several states also admit through JEE Main ranks, so check your state's counselling rules before you register.
The third layer is private universities. BITS Pilani does not take JEE scores at all — BITSAT is the only way in. VIT, SRM and Manipal run their own tests (VITEEE, SRMJEEE, MET) with multiple slots, and COMEDK fills private-college seats in Karnataka for students from every state. These are the safety net if your JEE rank falls short, and most have no negative marking.
The crunch comes in April and May. JEE Main Session 2, BITSAT Session 1, MET Phase 1, MHT CET, KCET, VITEEE, COMEDK, both EAPCETs and WBJEE all land within about eight weeks, while JEE Advanced follows in mid-May. Which Engineering Exams Should I Take?
Aiming for IITs and NITs
JEE Main (both sessions) + JEE Advanced, plus BITSAT and your state CET as backups.
Want a strong state college
JEE Main + your home-state CET (MHT CET, WBJEE, KCET, TS/AP EAPCET). Check whether your state uses JEE Main ranks too.
Want private-university options
BITSAT + 1–2 of VITEEE, SRMJEEE, MET and COMEDK. Most have no negative marking and multiple slots.
PCB student interested in engineering
VITEEE and SRMJEEE accept Biology for some branches; check each brochure. For pure science, also look at IISER IAT and NEST.

Which engineering entrance exams should I apply for in 2027?
Almost every engineering aspirant should write JEE Main, as it unlocks NITs, IIITs and GFTIs and is the qualifier for JEE Advanced (IITs). Add your home-state CET (MHT CET, WBJEE, KCET, EAPCET etc.) for state-quota seats, and 1–2 private-university tests like BITSAT, VITEEE, SRMJEEE or MET as backups.
Is JEE Main enough to get into a good engineering college?
JEE Main alone gets you NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and hundreds of state and private colleges that accept its score. For IITs you must also clear JEE Advanced, and for BITS Pilani you need BITSAT, since BITS does not accept JEE scores.
Do engineering entrance exams clash with each other?
They can. April–May is the busiest window, with JEE Main Session 2, BITSAT, VITEEE, KCET, MHT CET, COMEDK, MET and the EAPCETs all close together. Track the dates here and pick slots (where the exam allows it) that don't collide.
