What is JEE Main?

JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency twice a year — Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April. Your best NTA score across the two sessions is used for your All India Rank (AIR), which decides admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes through JoSAA counselling.

JEE Main is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced: the top ~2.5 lakh candidates (across categories) become eligible to write JEE Advanced for IIT admission. Paper 1 is for B.E./B.Tech, Paper 2A for B.Arch and Paper 2B for B.Planning.

How to Prepare for JEE Main

Practical, JEE Main-specific strategy.

  1. 1Finish NCERT Chemistry line by line — a large share of inorganic and physical chemistry questions come straight from it.
  2. 2Solve the last 5 years of JEE Main papers shift-wise and keep an error log of every mistake.
  3. 3Start full-length mocks by October and take one every week until December, then two a week before each session.
  4. 4Treat Session 1 as a serious attempt — a good January score takes pressure off April and Class 12 boards.
  5. 5Practise numerical questions without options — negative marking now applies to them as well.

JEE Main 2027 FAQs

When is JEE Main 2027?

As per NTA's examination calendar (16 September 2026), JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is on 22–24 and 28–30 January 2027, with 31 January as a reserve day. Session 2 dates aren't announced yet; based on previous years it is expected in the first half of April 2027.

When will JEE Main 2027 registration start?

NTA hasn't announced it yet. Session 1 registration usually opens in late October or early November and stays open for about four weeks on jeemain.nta.nic.in. Session 2 registration opens in February.

How many attempts are allowed in JEE Main?

You can write JEE Main for three consecutive years, with two sessions each year, so up to six sessions in total. Your best score among the sessions in a year is used for that year's rank.

Is there negative marking in JEE Main numerical questions?

Yes. As per the current pattern, both MCQs and numerical-value questions carry +4 for a correct answer and −1 for an incorrect one. Unattempted questions get zero.

What is the 75% criterion for JEE Main?

To get admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA, you need at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or be in the top 20 percentile of your board. It is not required to write JEE Main itself.

Is JEE Main tough to crack?

JEE Main is competitive — over 12 lakh candidates write it each year — but the syllabus is entirely Class 11 and 12 PCM. Consistent NCERT-level understanding plus regular mocks can comfortably get you a 95+ percentile.

When will the JEE Main 2027 admit card be released?

Session 1 admit card: 18 Jan 2027 (expected). Download it from jeemain.nta.nic.in using your application number.

When will the JEE Main 2027 result be declared?

Session 1 result: 12 Feb 2027 (expected); Final result & AIR: 19 Apr 2027 (expected). Results are published on jeemain.nta.nic.in.
